It may be obvious that Florida baseball is not ready to see LSU win the College World Series.
After a thrilling extra-inning victory in Game 1 of the finals, LSU was one win away from capturing its seventh baseball national championship, needing a win in Game 2 of Sunday’s best-of-three series. Scoring first, the Tigers seemed headed for victory.
But the Gators beat LSU, and then some.
Florida scored 6 runs in the third inning to take its first lead of the game, and the offense exploded the rest of the game as they cruised to a 24–4 victory, the most runs scored in a game in College World Series history. .
Broke Florida’s CWS record
Except for designated hitter Luke Heyman, every Gator starter recorded at least two hits, led by center fielder Wyatt Langford, who is projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. Langford went 5-for-5 with a walk, six RBIs and a home run. 449 feetwas Second longest homer in CWS history Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
First baseman Jack Gaglianone and right fielder Ty Evans each had five RBIs. The Gators scored 24 of their runs on 23 hits, including 19 earned runs, and scored in every inning but the first and fifth. Florida didn’t answer for 23 runs from the third until the ninth inning.
Each of the six LSU pitchers gave up at least two runs.
The Gators and Tigers will meet in the winner-take-all championship game on Monday night at 7 pm ET.
