Celebrities descended on New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night for the annual Met Gala. This extravagant event raises money for the museum’s costume company. Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth were co-headliners with Anna Wintour.
This year’s dress code is “The Garden of Time,” inspired by JG Ballard’s 1962 dystopian short story of the same name. A-listers came dressed in plenty of floral and botanical motifs, as well as creative distortion and destruction.
Designer Harris Reid, who walked the carpet with Demi Moore, revealed that her gown took 11,000 hours of silk embroidery and was made from vintage wallpaper. “Essentially she’s blooming on the carpet, this Victorian idea of being covered in this thorn…this beautiful flower at the perfect moment to bloom.”
Lana Del Rey’s custom Alexander McQueen dress, meanwhile, evoked the growth of a garden, hand-embroidered with thorny bronze-colored branches — inspired by the sculptures of artist Alberto Giacometti — forming a headdress like tulle headpiece.
The sleeves of Elle Fanning’s sheer Balmain gown appeared to be painted with birds made of resin for a mirror-like effect. Janelle Monae’s shell-sequin dress and Greta Lee’s sheer lace gown nod to the delicate nature of the flowers in the story.
Among the men who went bold for the night was model Wisdom Kay, whose head-to-toe red floral ensemble was seen with flared edges and Bad Bunny in a custom Maison Margiela dress and dramatic hat. Meanwhile, Jeff Goldblum looked the part of the story, adding a touch of Oz (he’ll star in “Wicked” later this year) by accessorizing with dark green sunglasses.
